PRESS REPORT 28/1/2004

The inaugural concert organised by FOLKAID on Thursday night 27/1/2004 was an outstanding success.

The Barnfield Theatre was completely sold out and the audience were thrilled by the wonderful performance of the entertainers.

Local lads John Asprey, Chris Billings, and Steve Ewart opened the evening with a collection of country music and original songs.

Legendary singer RALPH McTell then wowed the audience with a delightful set of his well-known songs. He finished with the entire audience joining in and singing "Streets of London"

The evening concluded with the South West’s famous SHOW OF HANDS. Steve Knightley and Phil Beer set about showing the audience why they are amongst the nominations for the BBC folk awards for the second year in succession. They were joined for one song by Mick Burch of Folkaid before being joined by Ralph Mctell for a rousing encore.

When asked of Ralph what he thought during the performance of Show of hands he simply replied, "It doesn’t get any better than this"

Thanks to the generosity of the performers who gave their time as well as donations from their CD sales, the organisers of FOLKAID were able to announce that the total monies raised from the event came to £6241.06. This amount will be presented in full to the coordinated tsunami appeal. ......................................................................

The Barnfield Theatre acoustic Music Club

Held on the first Friday of every month in the Bedford room of the Barnfield Theatre Exeter Tel 01392 270891 commencing at 8pm. (Click here for a list of performers who have appeared)

"An opportunity for singers with instrumental or harmony accompaniment to display and improve their talents and abilities before an audience in an amplified theatre setting"

Whats it all about ?

The idea was to book a regular venue which fits in well with the monthly Friday night folk circuit in the Exeter area.
Certainly not another folk club, the idea is to put together entertaining shows to an audience and provide a showcase for local talent.
An amplified system and lighting is provided together with a stage area and it is simply a case of plug in and play.

Performers are able to get further information by ringing the theatre on 01392 270891 or by ringing Gerry on 07843419178
The committee will use their judgement in allotting the timing of each spot thereby keeping the evening entertaining for all. It well may be one song for a nervous newcomer, two songs for an improver or an extended fifteen minute three song spot.
It is hoped that an appearance at the Barnfield Music Club is something for performers to prepare ,rehearse and work towards.

Performers can just turn up on the night and take their chance on being allocated a spot. However it is always helpful for the compere to know in advance who is likely to be available for his selection. The compere will be at the venue by 7.30pm.

The public are warmly invited. FREE ENTRY however we do need everyone to buy a draw ticket to cover our costs.
